Do my kids get enough exercise?

Sep 2nd 2014

Make sure your kids get enough exercise by working out with them

Do you feel like you or your kids get enough exercise? Between caring for a toddler and an infant and working, it's difficult to find "me-moments" in the day for an exercise routine. I know my 2-year-old doesn't have this problem; his play time provides plenty of potential for exercise, whether he's running around the yard, climbing at the park or building block towers and knocking them down.

But for many children, as they grow, so too do the distractions that limit their exercise and fitness. From computers to TV to digital devices, so many things are vying for a child's attention these days, which is why many parents are left wondering if their kids get enough exercise.

Children and adolescents should do 60 minutes or more of physical activity each day, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This may seem like a lot, but it can come in many forms. PE class, biking to school and extra-curricular activities like soccer, gymnastics and flag football all count in ensuring your kids get enough exercise. Jumping on a trampoline is another great way to exercise. In fact, if your family is pressed on time, remember 10 minutes of jumping equates to 30 minutes of running! The most important thing is to ensure your child is moving and grooving every day, not just once or twice a week.

Bike rides with friends ensure your kids get enough exercise

Why should you care about your child's physical activity? Exercise has a plethora of healthy benefits every mom and dad will love, such as:

  • Strong bones.
  • Healthy weight and BMI.
  • Strong muscles and leaner body.
  • Better sleep patterns.
  • Decreased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
  • Emotional health and better outlook on life.

The CDC recommends making aerobic exercise the bulk of your child's 60 minutes of daily exercise. If your kids need motivation, get out there with them! It's a great way to bond, plus you'll both feel great. Here are five fun ideas:

  1. Family bike rides through a local park or around the neighborhood.
  2. Gather the neighborhood kids to have everyone play tag in the yard.
  3. Visit the local pool to swim and have a "beach day" together any time of year.
  4. Pair up and play a game of basketball.
  5. Trampolines are a great way to get aerobic exercise, burning more calories than jogging. Check out Krista's Kids Workout video for awesome trampoline exercise ideas for the entire family!

Remember, when families spend time together playing, exercise is fun and those 60 minutes will cruise by. If kids get enough exercise now will, it will help shape their future lifestyle as adults. What other ways do you inspire your family to get up and exercise each day?
